Thoughts on UDel: Part I

Got back last night from UDel, having played for the first time in a long time. Playing on Saturday, I felt a little out of it, although I had very little pain. On Sunday, my pain level was substantially higher, but I felt a lot more with it on the field. Here's a little good, bad, and ugly on my play.

The good: Cutting on "Ultimate" from Maryland. He is definitely a good defender and put pressure on me, but all told, he got 0 D's on me the entire time and I scored on him a bunch. He also fronted me a lot and I was still getting open underneath. This felt very good.

The bad: Had one unacceptable throwaway on a dump to Jenkins. I'm not sure if it was a miscommunication between Jenkins and I or if I just simply threw it a little too hard and too fast, but one way or another, completely my fault. I threw Josh a pass in the endzone that was a little too hard and ended up bouncing off his chest. I need to throw that softer - although, in the situation, the throw was what I had intended - so with that in mind, I need to not make throws that have to be thrown that hard to be completed. Finally, I need to make a bid on the away pass from TallE that was underthrown and Ultimate got to. He had the inside position on the disc, but I think I could have laid out forward and potentially made a play on it.

The ugly: Losing to a ME team that wasn't Queens for the first time in a long time.

All told, this was a good tournament for us. In a way, I'm very glad we lost. Too many of the rookies have gone through this fall season thinking that we're the best thing in the world and that we can never lose. This attitude contributes to the complacency and lack of focus in practice. Also, I'm certainly glad that we didn't have to wait until Classic City Classic to get our asses kicked before we'd realize that we're going to have to work hard to accomplish anything this season. We're not entitled to beat all of the crappy ME teams, we're not entitled to a bid to nationals, and we needed to lose to realize that.

I will be taking it easy for the first few days this week, at least until my current pain from my sports hernia subsides. I suspect this will take 2 or 3 days. After that, I will get back into the gym and work on getting strong for CCC. I hope to play 2 games a day at CCC.

Thoughts on our Offense and Defense this weekend upcoming in my next post.

I was wondering the same thing you mentioned about losing to Maryland being a good thing. On the one hand, if you are where you want to be then you'll be blowing through teams like Maryland. On the other hand, you aren't there yet so hopefully that will motivate you.

I was talking to the Maryland guys yesterday at practice and they said that was the game against Pittsburgh was the only game they wanted to win all weekend. Funkel said that 7 guys played 70% of their points and then fillers played the other 30%. They wanted to get people big game experience but they wanted the win more and they got it. I wonder what they'll end up getting next time because they have hopefully motivated you guys.

If you play MSU at CCC, I hope you guys play your top line and destroy them. I don't dislike the team, but that guy on RSD throws out a lot of disrespect against a team he hasn't played against. Of course, even if you win, he'll say it was because he isn't playing.
